Ecoglo® F4171 Photoluminescent Flat Stair Nosing – Black Non-Slip Egress Safety Protection
Improve step-edge visibility, increase stair traction and support safer emergency egress during normal lighting, reduced lighting and power outages.
The Ecoglo® F4171 Photoluminescent Flat Stair Nosing combines a durable 2.7-inch-wide clear-anodized aluminum profile with protected photoluminescent step-edge strips and a hard-wearing black silicon carbide non-slip insert. Its right-angled profile fits over the leading edge of the stair to provide luminous guidance, dependable traction and physical protection for the stair edge.
Designed for exit stairways, public stairs, emergency egress routes and other applications where step-edge recognition in darkness is important, the F4171 absorbs energy from available natural or artificial lighting and remains visible after normal lighting is reduced or lost. It can be installed over concrete, timber, tile, steel, checker plate and suitable thin-carpeted stairs.
The F4171 is a photoluminescent stair nosing. Its protected luminous strips absorb energy from normal ambient lighting and remain visible after the lights go out. The black silicon carbide insert provides color contrast and non-slip traction but is not itself the photoluminescent component. Final code compliance should be confirmed against the project specification and requirements of the local authority having jurisdiction.
The protected photoluminescent strips absorb energy from natural or artificial light and remain visible when normal lighting is reduced or electrical power is lost.
The black non-slip insert provides strong visual contrast when paired with a lighter surrounding stair surface, helping users identify the leading edge of each step.
The hard-wearing silicon carbide non-slip material is integrally bonded to the aluminum substrate to provide durable traction on heavily travelled commercial and public stairways.
The passive photoluminescent system operates without batteries, wiring or ongoing electrical energy consumption.
Ecoglo® F4171 Product Configuration

- Unique ridges in the photoluminescent strips protect it from most abrasive wear. They provide slip resistance while still allowing the product to be easily cleaned.
- The hard-wearing silicon carbide non-slip material is integrally bonded to the aluminum substrate. Thousands of people can walk on it with no signs of wear and tear.
Superior Step Edge Safety
- The color contrasting the non-slip material with advanced photoluminescent technology provides step edge visibility in all light conditions.
- The unique ridges in the Ecoglo® photoluminescent strips and the integrated anti-slip contrast strips provide all-weather slip resistance.
Installed Durability:
- The rigid aluminum base spreads any applied load over a greater area of installation adhesive. Installation with a premium polyurethane adhesive/sealant is extremely durable, moisture resistant, and works very well on both smooth and textured surfaces.
For Indoor Use and Outdoor Use:
- Tested to accelerated UV/weathering exposure, and proven to be highly resistant to the effects of UV/weathering.
- The loss in performance is less than can be detected by the human eye when subjected to 6000 hours of UV exposure, which is similar to 30 years of outdoor exposure.
- The polymer used in Ecoglo’s patented process is “long chain” which forms a strong UV resistant product when bonding.

Ecoglo® Photoluminescent Stair Strips
FAQ
How do Ecoglo® contrast strips work?
Ecoglo®’s stair strips absorb ambient light—natural or artificial—and store energy. In the dark, they emit a bright glow for hours, marking step edges clearly without electricity or batteries.
How long do the strips glow in darkness?
Fully charged strips can glow for 6–12 hours, depending on light exposure. They recharge quickly under standard lighting conditions.
Are these strips code-compliant?
Yes, Ecoglo E20 strips meet IBC, IFC, OSHA, and local building codes for egress path markings and visibility in emergency conditions.
Why are continuous lines of luminance important in evacuation paths?
Continuous lines of photoluminescent markings along evacuation routes—especially on steps, handrails, and landings—help guide evacuees safely, even in darkness or smoke.
Unlike overhead lighting, photoluminescent stairway guidance (SWG) systems are placed low and remain visible beneath smoke layers, ensuring people can clearly see where to place their hands and feet during an emergency.
Can Ecoglo® contrast strips be used outdoors?
Yes. Ecoglo® contrast strips are UV-resistant, weatherproof, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications—ideal for stairwells, ramps, loading docks, and fire exits.
- Tested to accelerated UV/weathering exposure, and proven to be highly resistant to the effects of UV/weathering.
- The loss in performance is less than can be detected by the human eye when subjected to 6000 hours of UV exposure, which is similar to 30 years of outdoor exposure.
- The polymer used in Ecoglo®’s patented process is “long chain” which forms a strong UV resistant product when bonding.
How is the installed durability?
The rigid aluminum base spreads any applied load over a greater area of installation adhesive. Installation with a premium polyurethane adhesive/sealant is extremely durable, moisture resistant, and works very well on both smooth and textured surfaces.
How are the Ecoglo® photoluminescent strips installed?
Installation is simple: use adhesive (recommended for indoor use) or mechanical fasteners for extra durability outdoors or in high-traffic areas.
Are the Ecoglo® luminiscent strips slip-resistant?
Yes. Ecoglo® luminiscent strips feature high-traction ridges made of silicon carbide, bonded to an aluminum base for excellent slip resistance—even in wet or oily conditions.
